Hampshire Downs

The Hampshire Down Stud was founded in 2002,with the purchase of four pregnant ewes from Neil and Francis Murray of the Burrandool Stud in cental Victoria. Later in th same year a further three ewe lambs and a ram lamb were also purchased from the Burrandool Stud.

Hampshire Downs are bred for their outstanding meat quilities, while they are not an extremely big breed in Australia with just over 30 breeders nation wide, the breed is actually heritage listed. They are fairly well known as a terminal sire. Being well sort after as a terminal sire, for their early maturing lambs, high carcass weights and ease of lambing. Hampshire Downs are becoming very well known and the number of breeders is on the rise. They are really beginning to get out there despite what people may think of their dark points. The moneys in the meat, and they sure wont let you down there.

From the founding of our Hampshire Down Stud in 2002, it has progressed considerably. In 2006 we were kindly donated two ewes one of which has produced excellent progeny for us, these ewes were donated by Neil and Jeff Johnson of the Johnos Stud in Keith SA. In 2007 we saw the purchase of another stud ram from the Burrandool Stud and four ewes from Helen Raven of the Jurambula Stud in Southern NSW. In 2008 we purchased another stud ram introducing new genetics to the flock, as well as two ewes and a ewe lamb all from the Johnos Stud. The ram has had a major influence in the flock and produced some outstanding progeny.Further more in 2009 we purchased four ewes in the dispersal of the Horsham College Stud. In 2010 we under went an A.I program of which we have a ram lamb showing some good potential. He is sired by a Ramsay Park ram of Peter and Julie Button.

The Stud currently stands at one ram, three ram lambs, 8 ewes and 4 ewe lambs. 2011 lambs will be sired by both Johnos 719 and his son Langwarrin 64. A new ram has been selected for purchase from the Johnos Stud, he is a very well balanced ram and will be used for breeding late this year and early 2012.
